Turkey’s two main centre left parties have agreed to form an alliance to contest the forthcoming general elections. The Republican People’s Party (CHP) and the Democratic Left Party (DSP) announced their alliance at a press conference in Ankars Thursday, agreed to cooperate in general elections. According to Deniz Baykal, the chairman of the CHP, as the two leading social democratic parties in Turkey, his party and the DSP have undertaken important responsibilities in the past and have now decided to enter the upcoming elections in an electoral alliance to form a national solution under social democratic values that would reconcile the divided political structure, save the masses from economic problems and claim the fundamental principles of the republic. “We will protect Turkey and our common principles,” Baykal said. “We will work hand-in-hand to strengthen Turkey as a secular democratic republic.” The Turkish nation had been waiting for such a move for some time, he said, adding that he believed Turkey’s citizens would welcome the decision.
