Iraqi President Jalal Talabani had harsh criticism for Turkey for interfering with Iraq's domestic affairs.
Talabani threatened Turkey in an interview to be aired on National Public Radio on Tuesday, and stated that Iraq could make problems for Turkey, Iran and Syria as well if they do not stop interfering in his country's internal affairs.
"The Iraqi people will respond in the same way, we will support the opposition of other countries and try to make trouble for them, as they are doing for us," President Talabani said, adding that "We could do it in Iran, in Syria, in Turkey, but we are not."
Talabani accused Turkey, Iran and Syria of interfering and warned that Iraq's patience is “getting thinner than ice.”
Turkish Foreign Ministry officials commented that the meaning of Talabani's remark is a threat to Turkey, and the Turkish administration infers the comment “make trouble” as “the support of terrorist organizations such as the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).”
The strange thing is that only a few days before, Talabani, who has been in New York to attend the 61st United Nations (UN) General Assembly meeting, said that they had persuaded the PKK to announce a cease-fire shortly in a statement he made to the New York based news magazine Newsweek.
