Turkey was forced to accept sixth place in the 15th World Basketball Championship after suffering a 56-64 defeat at the hands of France.

Turkey gradually fought back in the third and forth periods but failed to cut the point deficit below four points.

Engin Atsur scored 15 points while Kerem Gonlum collected 11 rebounds for Turkey while F. Pietrus scored 11 points for the French team.

The Turkish team, whose roster was depleted by injuries, missed its top two shooters, including skipper Ibrahim Kutluay and Serkan Erdogan.

Turkey sees the championship in Japan as a warm-up for the 2010 championship to take place in Turkey. Turkey, the championship's big surprise, was beaten by South American powerhouse Argentine in the quarter-finals.

Turkey had finished the previous championship in ninth place after a lackluster performance in Indianapolis in 2002.
