The victory was the 25 year old Brazilian's first in the top flight. The second Istanbul Formula 1 Grand Prix has been taken out by unheralded Ferrari driver Felipe Massa, who held off his more famous rivals to take the chequered flag Sunday. Massa was able to lead from start to finish, having taken pole in Saturday’s qualifying. While the race was expected to be a duel between Massa’s Ferrari team mate Michael Schumacher and current championship leader Fernando Alonso of Renault, it was the rookie driver who made the pace. Though Massa’s win was a triumph for Ferrari, it did little to help Schumacher in his bid to take the title, the German finishing third behind Alonso. If the race had gone as team Ferrari had planned, Massa would have given way to Schumacher, but Alonso put paid to that. The German’s third placing means that he slips a further two points behind Alonso in the race for the title.
